About me

I am Dongfang Wang, and I am in Pratt School of Engineering Class of 2019. I came from Beijing, China, and I was graduated from Beijing National Day School for both middle school and high school.

Something about my name

My name Dongfang comes from Chinese, which means oriental. Since sun rises from oriental, my parent want me never lose hope and remind me that everyday is a new start. The pronunciation is kind of like Dooong Fung.

My hobby

I have habits in so many areas.

For sports, I have been playing badminton for six years, during which time I have played in lots of competitions and was therefore able to meet lots of people loving badminton like I do. Accordingly, I have signed up for Duke's badminton team as well and I am looking forward to play it with different players. I have just start to play tennis, but I really like to watch tennis games! Martial art is another one. I have learned some Kung-fu and Tae-Kwon-Do before, and I really appreciate the value they represent by calming down and concentrating more on improving ourselves than aggressing others.

Also, for arts, I enjoy playing the piano and writing traditional Chinese calligraphy.

My academic interest

I am now considering major in Biomedical Engineering, but I have a variety of interests in lots of areas, including Statistic, Biology, Neuroscience, Econ, Political Science and so on.

One Fun fact about me

When I was 4 years old, my parents made me play the violin. In order to show me rebellion, I pluck the strings on the violin and my parents had no choice but to concede.

My favorite demonstration

My favorite demonstration is Displaying Topographic Data. It is so cool that we can demonstrate topography through many ways, from Contour Plot, to Image, and toTexture Mapping. It is really a interesting way to draw the contour of continent by following the curve of elevation of '0'. To show the different elevations on continent, except for methods of Image and Texture Mapping, using level curve on a 2D mapping is also a good idea. The level curves draw the contour of area of the same elevation and therefore can not only show elevations of different areas, but also show how steep each areas are by comparing how concentrated level curves are.
