About Me

My name is Marina Smalling, and I am currently an engineering student in the EGR103 class. My name is pronounced mah-REE-na SMAL-engh, and I am interested in environmental engineering. I also like to bike, run, and be outside.

Grand Challenges in Engineering

The Grand Challenges initiative seeks to tackle 21st century problems with engineering. The Grand Challenge subsection concerned with providing economically and environmentally feasible clean water solutions is especially interesting to me. For example, I learned about an innovative water solution at Drinkable Book Could Provide Clean Water to the Masses, discovery.com, updated August 19 2015, accessed September 10 2015 (Grand Challenge).

MATLAB Demonstrations

MATLAB programming is another important tool for engineering students in EGR103. MATLAB's built-in help functions are especially useful and include a number of cool tutorials and demonstrations. My favorite demonstration is the Three-Dimensional Knot; I think the color-coding of the knot makes it look more three-dimensional. The shape of the knot is also very interesting, and I believe the example script does an excellent job of using comments to explain what the code is doing and of outlining a number of simple steps to arrive at a complicated final image.
