DukeEgr93/Toolkits1

This page is meant to document some weird behavior between Duke's Sakai and Toolkits systems. I used EGR 224 for the Spring 2017 semester:

  • Sakai: EGR.224L.01L.Sp17
  • Toolkits: EGR 224L-01L: Elec Fund Of Mechatronics, Spring 2017

  • First, I add my TAs to the class as TAs by going to Sakai -> Site Info -> Add Participants and then inside the Toolkits subwindow, adding them as Mentors.
    • They show up in the subwindow as mentors - please note, Allison Heredia was at this moment an instructor on Sakai because I did that before starting to take pics

    • They show up on the Sakai roster as teaching assistants (note - there were 85 participants at this point)

    • They show up in Toolkits as mentors (again, Allison Heredia is a Manager in Toolkits at this point)

  • Next, I change them to Mangers on Toolkits - this is to put them in the Toolkit-generated admin group for CIFS
    • They show up in Toolkits as managers - still 85 here

    • Before I update users on Sakai, they show up as Managers in the Toolkits subwindow on Sakai from the Add Participants link, just like Toolkits standalone.
    • Before I update users on Sakai, **SOME OF THEM DISAPPEAR ENTIRELY** from the Sakai roster! One shows up as an instructor, and one shows up as a teaching assistant. Elijah is here. Allison shows up as a teaching assistant. Joel, Matthew, Steven, and Qianyu are just...gone.

    • Hitting Update Participants on Sakai doesn't help.
    • Experience with ECE 280 indicates that "waiting" doesn't help either.

An e-mail from Jolie Tingen indicates that synchronizing the resources would fix the problem, and it did for ECE 280. Here is that e-mail:

Hi Michael,

I think this may be resolved but I'll need you to confirm. I synchronized the resources (which means I synchronized the Toolkit for your site and Sakai's participant list) and both are showing a total 88 participants. Here is the breakdown by application:

Toolkits:
All (88)
Admin (6)
Instructor (1)
Manager (5)
Contributor (7)
Mentor (7)
Learner (75)
Student (75)

Sakai:
All (88)
Instructor (4)
Teaching Assistant (9)
Student (75)

Do the participants have the correct roles in each list?

Best,
Jolie

and it does appear that ECE 280 is now correct, with the teaching assistants as TAs in the Sakai roster but the grading TAs (a subset of the course TAs) - whom I made Mentors on Toolkits - still showing up as Mentors on Toolkits they way they should. I do have two more graders for that course, though (Brandon Dalla Rossa and Alex Salas) -- I am wary about switching them over until I figure out how to make that work.
