About Me

Rebecca Milian...I am a member of Duke University's Class of 2015, and have the intent to major in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Public Policy. I am originially from White Plains, New York and some of my hobbies include lacrosse, travel, listening to music, soccer, hanging out with friends and watching football. Thus far, I love Duke University and am excited to take advantage of the multitude of opportunities and resources available at this amazing place.

Name Pronunciation

My full name is pronounced:reh-BEH-kuh mil-ee-ON, similar to the way the singer Christina Milian prounces her name, and the way the TV judge, Judge Milian, prounces her name.

Demonstrations

My favorite demonstrations definitely fall under the Graphics category, as they depict how to plot data in a manner that makes obtaining conclusions easier, while allowing engineers to see multiple aspects of a picture. The 3-D plots allows us to see the different types of topography, and allows us create and alter contour maps. Out of all the graphical demonstrations, the one that I enjoyed the most was "Viewing a Penny." This demonstration broke down a penny into a multitude of different plots including a contour plot, and a pseudocolor plot. These plots enable engineers to see the myriad of lines that are contained inside a penny, as well as the brightness of a penny. The pseudocolor plot with a colormap depicts the brightness of a penny compared to its height, and produces an image that looks similar to a photograph of a penny. This page was my favorite because it takes an object seen in everyday life, and uses MATLAB commands to plot this graphic and break it down into ways that I have never seen before. This demonstration truly highlights the strengths of the MATLAB program and increased my curiosity about what this program can truly accomplish.
