About Me

I am a Duke student who is an incoming freshman this year. I am an international student from Turkey. I was actually born in Westport, CT and I grew up there, but I moved to Istanbul, Turkey at the age of twelve and I have lived there since.

Name Pronunciation

When many people hear my name Engin they think of "Angus" from the food Angus Beef, or they simply think about "Engine". I don't know how to give a simple way to pronounce my name but it is not pronounced N-Gin (Gin as the alcoholic beverage), its engine without the -e at the end so you don't emphasize the -g in my name. My last name actually has Turkish letters in it that are not part of the english alphabet. Originally my last name is written like Bağören where it sounds like ba-orin (I had my roommate spell out what it sounds like for me). The ğ is a silent g so its like its not even there, and the ö is an o which is emphasized. But to make it simpler for my non turkish speaking friends I tell them to pronounce my last name as if there are no turkish letters, so Bagoren, whish sounds like BAG-oar-in.

Here are some interesting facts about my first and last name: • When I type Bagoren on word, word gives the red squiggly line and in the suggestions it gives me Bagwoman. • Engin means infinity.

Favorite MatLab Demo

My favorite demos from MatLab is "Bending Truss". The reason I like this demo is that it demonstrates the different levels of the low, level 1, and highs, level 12, frequency visually. This way I was able to understand how the change in the frequency of truss affects the bridge.

Interests and Hobbies

I played basketball so I also wish to play club basketball at Duke. I am also part of the Outing Club because I love outdoor activities. In general I love all sports, watching and playing it doesn't matter. I also love watching movies. Some of my favs are Inception, Avatar, Sherlock Holmes.
