About Me

I am a student in the Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University studying Biomedical Engineering. I am currently a freshman. I am from Baltimore, Maryland but I was born in Los Angeles, California.

Name Pronunciation

My name is Mia de Leon and it is pronounced "me-uh" as in the pronoun me and the noise you make when you are confused. My last name is pronounced "deh leh YON" similar to saying "day lay own".

Current Courses

The class I am currently enrolled in for my fall semester as a freshman include • EGR 103: Computational Methods in Engineering • CHEM 101: Introduction to Chemistry • MATH 212: Multivariable Calculus • PUBPOL 110: Information Systems and Society

Grand Challenges for Engineering

MATLAB Demonstration

My favorite MATLAB demonstration is "Earth's Topography" in the Graphics section. I enjoyed this demonstration because it showed how the aspects of MATLAB's graphic capabilities can be used for real world applications. The data used is from the National Geophysical Data Center, NOAA US Department of Commerce under data announcement 88-MGG-02, so the topography display produced is representative of actual data. I found this demonstration to be interesting because it shows how MATLAB graphics work and also how MATLAB functions can be applied to real life situations.
