Try The New Virtual Machines!
Unless you have to print from evince to a PDF, you should try the new virtual machines - just type
ssh -XY netid@login-teer.oit.duke.edu
and that will take you to a Teer-like machine that should have no problems.
This page is for posting "strange" things that happen, particularly with the Teer machines. If we can get them explained and solved - great! If not - at least you will know you were not alone! The machines to avoid are given below.

Not Responding
Check Ping Results to see which machines are not responding to hails. As of 12:08, 26 October 2014 (EDT) it's 13, 26, 43, 44, 45.
AFS Drive not connected (shortcuts do not exist)
When you try to cd to an AFS folder, it doesn't exist. When you try to use an AFS short cut, it says the folder does not exist.

Never gets to a prompt
After you give your password, the Teer machine never gives you a prompt.

Warnings / Other Things That Aren't Actually Problems
evince SettingsDaemon
When starting emacs, a strange error (or hundreds of them show up) saying:
** (evince:####): WARNING **: Failed to create dbus proxy for org.gnome.SettingsDaemon: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name
- Date(s): Starting two years ago, continuing on
- Machines: All Teer
- Solution: It still works...hit enter to get to a new command prompt but evince should be working
Xlib: extension missing
Occasionally, the error message comes up with graphical programs saying:
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "localhost:10.0".

- Solution: The graphical programs still work...hit enter to get to a new command prompt but the graphical program should be working

MATLAB LAPACK Issue
Some people reported an error with LAPACK when using polyval on MATLAB. OIT confirmed this is a known bug with MathWorks Bug Report and they are working on getting the fix installed.

Despite allowing you to log in, the computer hangs after the introduction and never gets to a command prompt.
