This page will cover how to scan handwritten documents for uploading to Gradescope. There are some options generally available to students on campus, though these may be unavailable at present due to COVID restrictions.
Printer / FAX / Scanner Combinations
If you have access to a multifunction device, that device typically has the ability to make multi-page scans and sometimes even has the ability to create a multi-page PDF and email it to you or save it to a computer on the same network. Check the operator's manual for your particular device for more information.
Mobile Devices
For these, please make sure that your scanned documents clearly show your work. See the information at Gradescope's Scanning Work on a Mobile Device page.
scannx System
- Locations:
- Edge: enter the Edge on the first floor from the breezway between Bostock and Perkins. Veer left as you come in and you will see a nook with two printers, a copies, a KIC scanning system, and, on the left, the scannx. Go to the scannx.
- Perkins: next to the Library Service desk - from main entrance, walk past Library service desk and table with scanners is just past that desk.
- Operation:
- Touch the "Touch here to begin" button in the screen
- Select the destination you plan to use. This example will use Email. Note that the Smartphone and Google Drive options are currently not actually working.
- For scan settings:
- Scan in: Either Color or Black & White -- whichever makes sense for the assignment.
- Quality: High Quality
- File format: Searchable PDF (this will do some character recognition)
- Do not add a passcode
- Click Next
- Use the Document: One Side option (your work should only be on one side of the page) and click next.
- Put your document in the zerox DocuMate 5445 face down, top down.
- Push the green "SCAN" icon on the touchscreen.
- Check to make sure that all pages scanned; if all is good, click Next
- Transfer the document:
- If using email, just put in your email address and perhaps a message to yourself, then click Next.
- The other options are not currently working - this will be updated if they get fixed.
ScanSnap
- Locations:
- Lilly: Main lobby.
- Perkins: next to the Library Service desk - from main entrance, walk past Library service desk and table with scanners is just past that desk.
- Operation: (note - instructions are on card next to scanner are incorrect)
- Log into the PC connected to the scanner.
- If there is a message about saving things to ScanSnap folder - it's wrong, so go ahead and just close that message.
- On the bottom right of the screen, there is a ^ symbol next to the network settings box (it it the left-most icon in a group that has the time and date and such). Left click that
- Of the icons that pop up, there is a blue circle with an S in it - right click it and select "Scan Button Settings"
- In the window that comes up, click on the High Quality button, then click on the Detail button at lower left.
- For the details:
- Scanning: Choose Excellent quality, Choose Color or B&W depending on what makes sense, Change to Simplex (everything should be one-sided)
- File option: File format is PDF, then select "Convert to Searchable PDF" and select all pages.
- Click Apply.
- Load the document face down top down in the scanner and press the blue button
- When scanning is done, pick "Scan to Folder"
- Save in the default folder which is your temporary documents folder
- Start a browser, open an email client, and send the file to yourself as an attachment.
