  • I have mac and i am having trouble connecting to the Latex program to do my lab. I loaded the program X11 from my OSX disk and when i open it the screen reads: bash-3.2$, and when i try and type in the code shown on the website: "xhost +
ssh -XY jcg24@ComputerName.oit.duke.edu" it says that xhost is not a valid command. Did I miss a step and/or what do i need to do in order to contact the Latex clusters. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jcg28 (talkcontribs)
    • I personally have only used the terminal on windows 10.4; the bash thing seems a bit odd though. Are you on 10.4 or 10.5? DukeEgr93 22:35, 26 August 2008 (EDT)
  • I also have a mac and I am using X11 to try and open up latex so I can edit my document, but I keep getting an error message that says "File /afs/acpub.duke.edu/users/1st letter/2nd letter/UserID/lab1.dvi does not exist" after I enter in "ls lab1" and then "okular lab1.dvi &" into X11. What and in what order do I need to type characters in order to open up Latex? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Pdavy324 (talkcontribs)
    • You need to be in your lab1 directory, which is inside the EGR53 directory. Once you log in, be sure to type
cd EGR53
cd lab1

then you can run emacs, LaTeX, or okular on the file. DukeEgr93 15:41, 29 August 2008 (EDT)

  • Mine goes through all the emacs process, but then when I try to modify the content on emacs, it simply doesn't type english - it only types rectangular shapes that absolutely make no sense, and the language shift doesn't work.. i am unable to modify the content on emacs because it only projects white rectangles on the emacs screen. How can I solve the problem? Jy84 11:35, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
    • I've...I've never seen that before. Do you have some kind of language pack installed on your computer? Is this happening when running on your computer, or always? DukeEgr93 19:04, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
  • When I try to open the dvi file, I keep getting this error message "Could not open file /afs/acpub.duke.edu/users/k/s/ksr15/EGR53/lab1/lab1.dvi which has type application/x-zerosize. okular can only load DVI (.dvi) files." I can open the emacs though. What is wrong?Ksr15 17:28, 1 September 2009 (EDT)
    • So - that isn't actually an X11R6 issue - it's a LaTeX issue. If the latex lab1.tex part does not complete, the lab1.dvi part will be empty; fix the .tex - fix the world. DukeEgr93 19:37, 1 September 2009 (EDT)
  • Every time i log into a computer at teer or hudson it tells me 'error in locking authority file /afs/acpub/users/r/w/rww3/.Xauthority' and i can't open matlab anymore because of this. How can i open matlab? Rww3 15:52, 16 September 2009 (EDT)
  • I get error message "Error: Can't open display: "" ". How can I open a program that requires display? --Syl6 00:09, 19 February 2010 (EST)
    • Gonna need more info - are you on a Mac? Using Terminal? Did you make sure to use the ssh -XY command when you logged in? Make sure not to use any setenv commands once you have logged in. If the ssh -XY does not work, please copy/paste what you are typing into your terminal here for more help. DukeEgr93 16:18, 19 February 2010 (EST)
  • Hi, my PC crashed and I am trying to work on EGR53 labs through Duke computers, esp. those in Lilly Library. Am I able to access Teer and Hudson computers through other on-campus computers? Thanks! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mwc11 (talkcontribs)
    • Should be able to - if the are Macs running MacOS use the X11R6 info otherwise use the X-Win 32 info. DukeEgr93 17:58, 28 October 2010 (EDT)
  • I took EGR103, Last Year (Fall 2013). I have had to use matlab for a few classes this semester but I have been unable to access it using the x11/terminal method. Several other applications work through terminal e.g. emacs, Maple. But Matlab pulls up the loading page with its logo and just stays there forever and never actually opens.
